work in progress
Shadusha ("Shad" for short) is of an alien race called the Y'vek (EE-vehk). They hail from an alternate Earth in a parallel dimension. They, along with others of their people, phased into the current reality in order to escape the destruction of their own version of our world. These portals appeared all over the world during the Middle Ages. The sudden arrival, strange appearance and manners, as well as the technology brought along with them had most cultures calling them some variety of "demon" and if not outright killing them, certainly exiling them from their communities.
It took a long time for what was left of their people to integrate into human society, but once communication barriers were broken down and became apparent that they were a peaceful people, they were able to win over some nations by virtue of trading knowledge and technology. They had to, in order to prepare this world so that it would not suffer the same fate as theirs.
Currently, it is the 22nd century. Earth is a clean, prosperous planet, and both humans and Y'vek alike are starting to explore distant planets and building habitation colonies in order to support their growing populations. Sanctions in many large countries are in place to prevent overpopulation before such settlements can be established. Families are only allowed one or two children per household in most countries, and the penalties for those who go around conceiving accidentally is steep.
The Y'vek are able to make use of their psychic abilities to tune themselves to another individual easily, both sharing in their pleasurable sensations directly, or amplifying them. Shadusha is quite experienced with such techniques, so they operate a shop of their own at which they provide "release therapy" to those seeking pleasure without the commitment. Because of this, and inter-species procreation being impossible, intimate relations between members of both species has been on a drastic rise.
The same psychic abilities allow them to reanimate dead tissue and temporarily connect with the minds of the deceased. The other half of Shadusha's enterprises comes from the services she offers to morgues, mortuaries, funeral homes, and even law enforcement. Being able to manipulate bodies in such a way makes it easy for a funeral home cosmetologist to redress a body, repair damage that would otherwise be unsightly for presentation, and pose the deceased properly without risking any additional harm. There is also nothing like tapping into the mind of the recently deceased in an attempt to draw forth clues as to their assailant or other circumstances of their death. Humans are largely skeptical of the latter, but many families pay handsomely for any extra tips; the odd seance here and there also helps pay the bills.
Also, though everyone knows there are quantifiable scientific reasons for what they do, the term "magic" for their particular brand of mental flexing has never really died. A holdover from ancient times and their arrival. Some who continue to distrust and despise their kind do refer to them as "demons" but thankfully for them, the political influence of organized religion is not nearly as widespread and dangerous as it once was.
Largely amusing only to Shadusha, their shop is called "The Little Death" — hence the journal name. Their sense of humor tends toward the morbid/dark jokes and the like.
(note: Shadusha's design was inspired by a Zabrak OC I once had that I re-purposed the look of for this character. it just worked out that way! all art is commissioned and paid for by me, and as such I'd appreciate no icon borrowing. thank you!)
